MedTech News Recap – January 2021

At Hospital Overstock, we think it is important to follow the most recent news about medical devices. That is why we share articles about the latest technology, acquisitions of major medical companies and FDA updates. This month, the MedTech industry prepared for changes in healthcare and updates in technological efficiency. Here are some of the highlights.

FDA Guidelines and Regulation

FDA Guidelines for February 2014

Mid-month, the FDA released the final version of its Device Pre-Submission Guidance document. Sources like RAPS and Electronic Design explain how this document affects the medical device industry.

The FDA’s unique device identification rule continues to be a big topic of conversation. A third medical device company obtained UDI accreditation from the FDA. In addition, U.S. IT officials advocated for UDI integration with eHealth records.

Digital Health News

Google and Apple Entering Digital Health

The mHealth industry made strides in data collection with Bluetooth and network connectivity, which provides more opportunity for consumer engagement. As more medical devices become Bluetooth enabled, mHealth is creating a more seamless connection between healthcare devices and patient medical information.

Many discussed the potential impact of Google and Apple in digital health. Both companies have made plans for their own medical devices.

Recalls and Concerns

St. Jude Medical warns that its older pacemakers may stop working during surgical procedures. While the devices have not been recalled, St. Jude urges physicians to evaluate the patient’s reliance on the pacemaker prior to surgery.

The hackings of three big medical companies raised many security concerns. MDDI Online, The Wall street Journal and Healthcare IT News shared stories about the safety and security of medical device technology.

What MedTech news did you hear last month? How will these stories affect your industry? Tell us on our social channels listed below.

Features to Look for in a Manual Wheelchair

When purchasing a manual wheelchair, there are many features to consider. Customizing the wheelchair based on weight, chair size, weight capacity and seat widths are important for comfort and durability. Is your wheelchair intended for outdoor or indoor use? Do you need it to fold into a trunk? What is the cost, and does it have a warranty? Do you need a reclining back, removable armrests, adjustable footrests or swing-away footrests? These are all good questions to ask. Below is a list of the options available to consumers in the market for a manual wheelchair.

Types of Manual Wheelchairs

Basic Wheelchairs

The Features of a Basic Wheelchair

A basic wheelchair, like the Mckesson wheelchair we sell at Hospital Overstock, is durable, made for indoor and outdoor use and designed to be pushed by another person.

Manual wheelchairs typically have large rear wheels, footrests and armrests. Footrests can come with the capabilities to swing away, be removed or elevated. Armrests can be permanent, removable, full-length or desk-length. A standard wheelchair can weigh 35 or more pounds. Lighter wheelchairs are manufactured, but are often more expensive.

A chair’s dimensions are important to consider. Seat width and height vary to accommodate people of all sizes. The standard width is 17 to 19 inches, but wider seat widths are also sold. Narrow seat sizes can come between 15 to 17 inches. Pediatric wheelchair seats are even smaller, but can typically support up to 250 pounds. In terms of seat height, the standard size works for those over 5 feet tall. Those under or over 5 feet, may require short or tall versions.

Transport Wheelchairs

The Features of a Transport Wheelchair

A standard transport chair is lightweight, foldable and smaller in seat dimensions. While these wheelchairs can support up to 300 pounds, they are not intended for everyday use. Rear wheels often smaller than a basic wheelchair, at around 8 inches. Like desk-length armrests in basic manual wheelchairs, these armrests are shorter to fit under a table.

Heavy-duty transport chairs have slightly larger wheels, bigger seat sizes and can support a weight capacity of 400 pounds. However, the wheelchair itself should not weigh more than 35 pounds. Recliners are considered heavy-duty with the ability to handle up to 700 pounds.

Sport Wheelchairs

The Features of a Sport Wheelchair

Sport wheelchairs are designed for various sports, including rugby, racing, fencing, badminton, cricket, basketball and tennis. Football, unlike some of the other sports, use power chairs, rather than manual wheelchairs. A common feature in most sport wheelchairs are angled wheels for easy maneuvering and speed. Racing chairs generally have a front wheel and two in the back. Some are even propelled through a handcycle. All-rounder wheelchairs are lightweight and used can be used for many sports.

Products That Make Showering Easier

Getting in and out of the shower can be a struggle as people age, go through injuries or recover from surgery. At Hospital Overstock, we sell many products that can make showering easier and safer. These items are ideal for nursing homes and physical rehabilitation centers or for personal use. Check out the benefits of our favorite shower aids below.

Shower Chair

Shower Chair

Shower chairs, benches or stools are designed for patients who have difficulty sitting in a standard bathtub or standing in the shower. Seats without a back, like the Medline Shower Chair (SKU: G30403), provide easy access and maneuverability. The blow-molded seat provides comfort and strength with a weight capacity of 250 pounds (113 kg). This product also has rubber feet and seat drainage holes to reduce slipping. Its aluminum frame is light-weight, durable and corrosion-proof with legs that are height adjustable.

Want to see more options? We sell other varieties of shower chairs without backs at Hospital Overstock like the Revolution Mobility Shower Bench (SKU: MBA-221), the Medline Shower/Bath Bench (SKU: MDS89740KD) and the Carex Universal Bath Seat (SKU: B670-00).

Grab Bar

Grab Bar

A grab bar is another useful shower aid, allowing users to safely enter and exit the tub with more stability. Medline’s Bathtub Grab Bar (SKU: MDS86321W) adjusts to fit tubs 2.75 to 6.25 inches wide and locks in place. The handle is made out of stainless steel, but its rubber-lined pads prevent scratching the tub’s surface. This grab bar requires tool-free installation.

Detachable Shower Head

Detachable Shower Head

Hand-held shower heads are perfect for patients who have limited mobility when bathing. If standing or moving in the shower is difficult for you or someone you know, consider the Ergonomic Hand Held Shower W/ Diverter Valve (SKU: G98035) made by Medline. This product has many intriguing features, including a built-in water saver that uses less than 2.5 gallons per minute. The diverter valve adjusts to your existing shower head and connects to an extra long hose that extends 86 inches. Its on/off switch and massage buttons can be controlled at your fingertips.

Have you used any of these shower aids? What has been your experience with them? Tell us on our social media channels!

The summit, in its 20th year, brings together senior healthcare executives and their GPO and supplier partners to improve the healthcare supply chain. Get Past Your Cold This Spring with These Products

The weather is starting to warm up and as spring rolls in, we can bid farewell to the cold winter months. We cannot, however, completely say goodbye to colds and the flu. Catching a cold when the sun is starting to shine is not the best situation, but we have some medical products that can ease the process for you.

Hospital Overstock Products To Get Past Your Cold

Thermometers

In the spring, pollen levels rise and allergens that lay dormant in the winter are suddenly active again. Symptoms like post-nasal drip, scratchy throat, headache and congestion are common with both colds and allergies. Fevers with or without body and muscle aches often happen during colds, but never with allergies. Thermometers can help determine which ailment is keeping you indoors and which step to take next in your road to recovery.

Tongue Depressors

The most common symptoms of a cold pertain to the mouth and throat, such as cough and sore throats. Examining these vital body parts are made a bit easier with Puritan’s Adult Tongue Depressors (SKU: PUR-25-705-1). We carry these brand-new, individually wrapped depressors that are made of a high-quality birch wood. These wooden depressors are standard, senior size at 6 inches long and have no splinters or rough spots.

Pill Bottles

Medicine will certainly help reduce your cold symptoms, and to keep your medicine in order, a pill bottles like Elite Medical Products’ Medicine Bottles (SKU:  101-CR-8) are essential. Each is 2.5 inches in height and 1 inch in width. The press-lug lock cap is an added safety cap feature that is child resistant to keep children out of your medicine.

Heating Pads

Colds often bring aches and pains. To ease these cold symptoms, use what generations of people have used to help with pains: heat. Heating pads envelope your aching muscles and increase the flow of blood to these parts of your body. Your muscles will relax, losing their tightness and strain, and your aches will reduce.

What helps you or your patients get through a cold? Let us know about your experiences on our social media channels!

The Key Differences Between Adult and Baby Diapers

At Hospital Overstock, we carry a number of incontinence products for adults, including adult briefs, pads and mattress covers. We also sell diapers and pull-ups for babies. While both serve similar purposes, all diapers are not created equally. There are many distinctions between the two products. Here are the key characteristics that make adult and baby diapers different.

Baby Diapers

Baby Diapers

One of the main differences between baby and adult diapers is absorbency. Baby diapers are not made to be worn for hours. Some even have color-changing wetness indicators that tell parents when they need to be changed. Because baby diapers are changed more frequently than adult diapers, thickness is not as important.

The design of baby diapers is pretty standard, as most babies are similar in size. Most have the standard one tape on each side, which is sufficient enough to hold the weight of a baby. Pull-ups, on the other hand, have an underwear-like design that is easy to get on and off.

Adult Diapers

Adult Diapers

Adult diapers are much more absorbent than baby diapers. They often include more absorption areas for incontinence protection, rather than the single strip of absorption material found in baby diapers. Like baby diapers, some adult briefs have wetness indicators. Thickness is important for absorbency, but it is not beneficial for discreteness. Depending on the chosen style, thickness and absorbency will vary.

From leg opening to waist diameter, adult briefs designs adapt to accommodate for multiple sizes. Most do not include the same two-tape design that is found in baby diapers. Instead, they are made to be worn like normal underwear. The waistband is a very common and imperative characteristic, allowing the diaper to fit properly and stop leaks.

Have you noticed the differences between adult and baby diapers? Tell us which features were the most apparent to you on social media.

3 Signs That You May Need Mobility Aids

There comes a time in everyone’s lives to consider mobility aids. At Hospital Overstock, we want our customers to be comfortable and safe, which is why we sell many products for mobility, including wheelchairs, crutches and scooters. Here are three signs to keep in mind when deciding if mobility aids are right for you or your loved one.

1. Difficulty Walking

Don't Let Injuries Slow You Down

Medical conditions, injuries or age can cause fatigue or weakness when walking. Seniors in particular may find it difficult to walk due to arthritis pain, decreased strength and other aging factors. If it is painful to walk short distances, it may be time to consider a mobility device. From crutches to wheelchairs, aids can ease the pain and still get one from point A to point B.

2. Standing and Balance Problems

Mobility Aids Provide Comfort and Safety

Some individuals who experience trouble balancing may not notice that they are having difficulty. On the other hand, they may be aware of their instability and embarrassed to admit it.

NIHSeniorHealth recommends that people ask themselves the following questions:

  • Do I feel unsteady?
  • Do I feel as if the room is spinning around me?
  • Do I feel as if I’m moving when I know I’m standing or sitting still?
  • Do I lose my balance and fall?
  • Do I feel as if I’m falling?
  • Do I feel lightheaded, or as if I might faint?
  • Does my vision become blurred?
  • Do I ever feel disoriented, losing my sense of time, place, or identity?

If “yes” is the answer to any of these questions, the website urges adults to consult their doctors. Mobility aids like canes and walkers can help with stability and movement. While it may be hard for seniors to admit loss of mobility, it is too dangerous to ignore the signs.

3. Senior Falls

Mobility Aids Prevent Senior Falls? Should You Consider One?

If you or a senior in your life has experienced a brutal fall, walkers, wheelchairs and scooters are good investments. According to NIHSeniorHealth, “each year, more than 1.6 million older U.S. adults go to emergency departments for fall-related injuries.” And most of them occur around the home. You can reduce the risk of falls by understanding what causes them. Senior falls happen for a variety of reasons, including lack of physical activity, impaired vision, medications, diseases, surgeries and environmental hazards. The CDC’s National Center for Injury Prevention and Control has a number of publications and tools to help prevent senior falls.

Caregivers and mobility aid users, have you noticed additional signs? Tell us what they are on our social media channels.

Five Tips for Managing Your Diabetes

According to the American Diabetes Association, “Approximately 30 million children and adults have diabetes in the United States. Out of that number, nearly 95% have type 2 diabetes.” Because of these high statistics, it is important for individuals to get checked for diabetes and to take measures to keep diabetes under control. Here are some tips to manage living with diabetes.

1. Get the Facts and Visit Your Doctor

Know all the facts and do your research. The CDC’s Division of Diabetes Translation provides a comprehensive infographic with current U.S. diabetes statistics. You can also ask people living with diabetes for recommendations. Joining a support group is a great way to get the inside scoop from other diabetics.

While it is great to get advice from outside sources, there is no substitute for visiting a doctor. Medical professionals can give you the most accurate advice that is tailored to your specific condition. What is the diagnosis from your doctor? Which type do you have? Understanding the intricacies of your diabetes type can help you better manage it.

2.  Measure Your Blood Sugar

Measure Your Blood Sugar to Manage Diabetes

While living with diabetes, it is important to measure your blood glucose levels. At Hospital Overstock, we offer glucose monitors as well as the testing strips. Our products can be up to 50 percent off the cost of the original price. Be sure to follow your doctor’s orders about the frequency and measurement of your blood sugar tests.

3. Follow a Medicine Schedule

Health care professionals will often tell you when the most opportune times are to take your medicine. With that information in mind, it is best to follow a medicine schedule. In addition, many diabetics keep their medicine on hand and purchase a medical alert bracelet in case of an emergency.

When traveling, make sure to pack enough medicine for your entire stay. WebMD advises that you “keep medicines, syringes, and blood sugar testing supplies in your carry-on bag. Do not check these supplies in case your luggage is lost.” It is also a good idea to bring copies of your prescriptions with you.

4. Eat Recommended Foods

Knowing what foods to avoid and which are okay is crucial to maintaining your health with diabetes. It is generally recommended that diabetics stay away from the following foods:

  • Those with added sugars and trans-fats: fruity drinks, purchased smoothies and sweets.
  • Anything high-carb, high-sodium, high-fat or high in calories: burgers, nachos, cinnamon rolls and pizza.
  • Fried entrees and fast food: fried chicken, battered fish and French fries.

Diabetic Living Online, an online magazine, is a great resource full of tips and healthy eating advice. This website even has a range of recipes for people living with diabetes. Try them and tell us your favorites!

5. Start an Exercise Program

Exercise to Manage Diabetes

Exercising is important for everyone’s health, but especially for those living with diabetes. It has been known to help stabilize blood sugars, lose weight and reduce the risk of heart disease. Three to four times a week sessions are often recommended. For optimal results, be sure to exercise for at least 20 to 40 minutes, vary your workouts and include some resistance training. As always, consult your doctor before starting an exercise regimen.
